Discover the real Mallorca
The Spanish island of Mallorca is situated off the east coast of Spain in the Mediterranean. It is the biggest of the Balearic islands and its location and warm climate have attracted visitors for many years. It is perhaps most well known for its sunny tourists resorts of the Palma bay area, such as Magalluf, where the beach and the lively night-life are the main attractions. However, Mallorca has a lot more to offer than just a simple beach holiday.

The main city of Palma, with its majestic Gothic Cathedral, has an interesting history to be investigated, as well as the more modern delights of the shops and restaurants. Highlights include the 10th Century Arab Baths; Castell de Bellver, the 14th century royal fortress; and the beautiful Parc de le Mar, with its artificial lake in the shadow of the Cathedral. To the north of the island is the restored walled city of Alcudia, where there was once Greek, Phoenician and Roman settlements. Today the remains of Roman houses and an amphitheatre can still be viewed. The western coast is dominated by the Tramuntara mountains. This spectacular mountain range is an amazing place to go walking, hiking, mountain-biking, or even canyoning and sea-kayaking. For the less active, it is still a breathtaking place to go for a drive. Mallorca is an excellent place to go for an activity holiday. There are many marinas from which to go sailing, water-skiing or windsurfing and many of the resor ts hire out pedal boats. The surrounding clear waters also make Mallorca a great place for scuba diving, particularly around the shallow coves of the east and south coasts. The island is also an ideal place to go horse-riding, as well as being a golfers dream, with 11 official standard golf courses dotted around the island.

For a more sophisticated Mallorcan holiday, it is possible to take a break in a rural hotel away from the beach resorts. The Agroturismo Alfatx, at the foot of the Tramuntara, is just 15km from the centre of Palma, yet it offers a very different sort of holiday. With a plantation of oranges, almonds, carob and fig trees, the hotel itself offers a variety of rooms and suites, as well as extensive facilities such as a swimming pool, sun terrace, lounge, reading room and honour bar, all in a country house setting. The surroundings mean that much of the hotel food is their own organic fruit and vegetables and they can also provide yoga, massage and piano concerts. Within the local area additional activities such as trekking, wine-tasting, hot-air ballooning, sailing, cycling, golf and horse-rising are available.

Getting to Mallorca is very easy, as flights are available from numerous UK airports direct to Palma de Mallorca airport. Hiring a car is the best way to get around and explore the whole island.
